The 5 Ways of Well Being
One of the hardest things to do as a parent is to slow down and find the time to talk with and listen to our children, no matter what their age. Here are some things parents can help their children do to connect well:
-
Have shared meals with their families
-
Spend fewer hours in front of the TV
-
Find them a mentor - someone who isn't part of the family
-
Make friends outside of school
-
Help their neighbours
-
Write letters and cards to family and friends
Young people need a range of opportunities to be active, both in and outdoors. These can be as straightforward as walking, running, skipping, cycling or swimming, all of which are great at improving strength, balance, fitness and concentration. Children should:
-
Take the stairs rather than the elevator
-
Join a swimming class
-
Attend a summer camp
-
Learn to ride a bike
-
Participate in cross-country competitions
-
Learn to play a new sport
BE ACTIVE
We shouldn’t underestimate how differently children see and interact with the world around them. Here are some things parents can help their children do to take notice of their surroundings:
-
Go apple picking at the local farm
-
Dress up for cultural day
-
Learn a new language
-
Walk on a nature trail
-
Talk about their feelings
-
Start writing a journal
Helping, sharing and just generally being nice promotes a child's sense of self-worth, strengthens community and helps them maintain a positive attitude. Here are some things children can do to give back in their community:
-
Always say "Please" and "Thank you"
-
Volunteering for a school club
-
Smile at people who walk by
-
Pick up garbage at school
-
Always help their peers
-
Teach a friend something new
GIVE
Learning outside of school is just as important to children as learning at school. The sense of achievement that they feel from gaining new knowledge or skills matters a lot. Here are some ideas
for children to always keep learning:
-
Learn how to bake
-
Make a DIY craft
-
Join classes to learn an instrument
-
Read a new book everyday
-
Take a sign-language course
-
Take part in the school play
